What Is It?

Jaw disorders affect some 10 million people in the United States alone and is a serious problem. Patients who grind their teeth are likely to damage their gums, teeth, and bone structure around their mouth.

The most common jaw disorder we see is related to the temporomandibular joint. This joint connects your skull and lower jawbone together and is responsible for allowing your mouth to open and close, as well as chewing foods and speaking.

Patients who have temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMD, are likely to experience a clicking sound when their mouths open and close. Along with this jaw disorder, patients often experience headaches, pain in their necks, and even sensitive teeth.

Treating Jaw Disorders

Dr. Michaels may prescribe medication to help control your symptoms of TMD. Some patients may need a special dental appliance to place in their mouths at bedtime. Biofeedback is also sometimes used to help us get more information about your body.

Depending on the severity of your TMJ disorder, surgery may be required to relieve you of your pain and discomfort. During your consultation with Dr. Michaels, she will thoroughly examine your jaw, teeth, and mouth to better assess your condition.

If you are experiencing swelling or difficulty moving your jaw, contact our office right away so we can provide the care you need and improve your quality of life.
